The power of the unconscious mind which informs our instincts

What are your instincts telling you, and how much do you trust them?

You’re talking with someone and suddenly you get a feeling that something is not right. Weirdly, those alarm bells start ringing. Bizarrely, there are red flags. And you just can’t put your finger on what is amiss. Yet, you know that something is not adding up. Similarly, you have to make a decision. Logic goes out of the window. You get a gut feeling about the right course. Sometimes it makes sense. Other times, you surprise yourself. Alternatively, you may get all of those “odd” feelings and simply allow them to pass you by. Crucially, our instincts inform us all of the time. So, what are your instincts telling you, and how much do you trust them?

An old-fashioned telephone, which is all about communicationYou’re receiving information all of the time. Data, for want of a better word, is coming into our awareness all day, every day. Every second or every minute. What you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell. A continuous stream of sensory input. Realistically, there is no way that you can consciously appreciate all that you’re experiencing. Indeed, the general understanding is you can process between five and nine bits of information at any one time. Everything else is handled unconsciously.

Essentially, it is all there in some form or another. Your unconscious mind is receiving and somehow processing all of that data. How it does that is beyond me. There is a continuing debate as to how much we actually store, and how much our unconscious mind deletes the irrelevant and combine memories and learning to fill in the blanks.

Our unconscious mind works powerfully to join the dots and bring those conclusions into our awareness, albeit in the form of that sixth sense, that gut feeling, that instinct.Remarkably, it doesn’t really matter how it all happens. What’s important is that all that you are experiencing is giving us information. Consequently, it is that information that tells you that something is not right or is indeed the right decision. Unconsciously, you have picked up on something, a choice of words, a shift in tone, a change in body language. Additionally, your unconscious, with its great processing power, has joined the dots in way that would take you so much time to do consciously.

Unfortunately, rather than a clear message, the unconscious mind is hugely symbolic. Hence the red flags and alarm bells. Or, the sudden sense that this is the right course of action.

Alarm bells ring when our unconscious mind wants to bring something into our awarenessYour instincts. That sixth sense. Intuition. A gut feeling. Whatever you call it, what are your instincts telling you, and how much do you trust them? You can learn to listen and you can learn to trust. It can, at times, feel like a leap of faith. Yet, the more you trust, the more choices and options open up for you.

Crucially, the more you learn to listen the more you realise how much you actually know and understand. You become aware of how much information you actually have. Sometimes, it feels OK to act on that instinct. Sometimes you may want to take some time. Evaluate the information and then decide on next steps.

Personally, I think the worst decision is to simply ignore what the unconscious mind is telling us. Supress the gut feeling. Dismiss the sixth sense. Frankly, it just feels wrong to ignore them. We are receiving volumes and volumes of data all of the time. We can only process consciously a tiny percentage of that data. Honestly, how good are your decisions if you’re deciding with most of the information missing?

So, if you know what to do, do it now. If you’re not sure, book an initial consultation here, and then take the next step. You know that you can do it, and you know that it makes sense, don’t you?
