Three darts, ready to throw with laser-focus at the target.

Is everything else neglected as you focus on just one part of life?

You may have many goals and plans. Alternatively, you might only have one or two. And, of course, you could well be one of those people who simply drifts through life, going with the flow. Success may follow your actions. Consequently, you feel at ease with life and the balance you achieve as success weaves itself through every aspect of your life. However, this is not the case for everyone. Some find no or limited success. Critically, there are those whose success feels out of balance. So, think about it. Is everything else neglected as you focus on just one part of life?

Chaos on a busy city street, people, cars all over the place.I’ve met people over the years who have focussed so much on their career that family and friends have fallen by the wayside. Indeed, some of those people have experienced poor mental and physical health as a result of their singlemindedness. On the other hand, I’ve worked with those who become obsessed with their health. Some become so obsessed it’s almost like an addiction. Everything else, therefore, takes a distant second place.

Rocks balanced perfectly on each other, blue skies and a rising sun. It's a new day. There is nothing wrong with being determined. It can and does lead to great results. It gets the job done. You have the satisfaction of making a plan and then making it happen. Similarly, going with the flow can lead you to all sorts of unexpected adventures, which may or may not be what you want.

Being determined, being so focussed on one aspect life, can, though, lead you to neglect everything else. Consequently, you lose balance and perspective. If one area of life becomes all-consuming, how can you possibly give of yourself to anything more? Career comes at the expense of family, friends and relationships. Health leads you to neglect those around you. A hobby becomes so important you end up isolated and alone. That one relationship results in lost friendships and strained family ties.

One of the most effective tools for checking that balance is the wheel of life. Firstly, watch the video here. Then listen to the podcast here.

Boats resting on the shore of a completely calm lack, hills in the distance as the sun sets.Crucially, by quickly scoring your sense of satisfaction with each area you get a sense of where you are. If you’re being honest, and honesty is the key, the balance or imbalance will soon become apparent. You may be comfortable with the imbalance. Equally, you may not.

What you do next is up to you. If you know what to do to restore the balance, start now. If you don’t care or can’t be bothered, ask yourself why not. Alternatively, if you’re not sure how to change, book an initial consultation here, and then take the next step. You know that you can do it, and you know that it makes sense, don’t you?
