The powerful secret of how we process the world

In my podcast on 27th April 2026 (series 3, episode 4 – “Communication now in a thought-created world”) I talked about the NLP Model of Communication. It’s all about how we process the world through our five senses. We do, though, each have a preferred system for processing the world and a preferred system for retrieving stored memories. In NLP we talk about representational systems, the systems we use to process information and retrieve memories. For some, those systems may be the same, and for others less. Interestingly, it is though, part of the powerful secret of how we process the world.

Firstly, let’s look at the four representational systems; visual, auditory, kinaesthetic, and auditory digital. Visual people prefer to experience the world through what they see. Unsurprisingly, the auditory people are all about what they hear. The kinaesthetic people among us are all about the feelings. Interestingly, the auditory digital are about the logic, the words and the understanding.

We use two systems.Secondly, we all have two systems. We have a primary representational system and a lead representational system. Our primary representational system is our preferred system for processing our experiences. Our lead system is the system we use to retrieve memories.

Three icons, one happy, one sad, one neutral. What's your feedback?Crucially, we can work out what our preferred system is. Click here to complete a questionnaire and discover your preferred system.

Critically, this is giving you information. It may help you make sense of the reasons for finding some things easy to understand and others less so. It may give you insight into being better prepared for the future. Not everything will be presented in your preferred system. You can now work out how to convert from how things are presented into a system that works for you.

A compass on a map. Take charge, and put yourself at cause.Similarly, by understanding the four systems, if you struggle in one system, switch to another. See what results you get. Feel the difference. Hear from a new perspective. Logically, it makes sense.

Additionally, it means you can start to use different systems with different people. Adapt to others and build more rapport. Obviously, you don’t have to use other systems all of the time. Simply using a phrase here and there can make all of the difference.

It’s the subject of my most recent podcast which you listen to here (or on your usual podcast provider – find me on SpotifyAmazon, YouTube and Apple Podcasts).

If you know what to do next, do it now. If you’re not sure, book an initial consultation here, and then take the next step. You know that you can do it, and you know that it makes sense, don’t you?
